Problem I've had, how to prevent it from happening again?

I had a problem with my files, my files got corrupted. Both the player and world, I tried doing everything but I couldn't retrieve the latest version of these files.

So what happened? It said 'Local files are in conflict' and showed me two options:
1. Download old files to machine
2. Download new files to cloud

I downloaded old files to machine, then I tried playing Terraria, and this happened:
